14:05-15:35Panel1 RESPONSIBILITY IN ACTION: LAW, ECONOMICS, AND
SOCIETY FACING GLOBAL CHALLENGES

[Panel Chairs]
■Gilles CAMPAGNOLO (Professor, Paris Pantheon-Sorbonne University & CNRS)
■Adrienne SALA (Assistant Professor, Waseda University)

Public policymaking in Europe and Japan relies on legal and economic models, employing evidence and expertise to navigate questions of justice, interest, and the limits of economic knowledge. The judicialization of agents' behavior influences both worldviews and public policies, shaping the shared values of Europe and Japan in a rapidly evolving global context. Amid pressing challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, labor dynamics, and growing inequality, these frameworks demand deeper scrutiny.

[Panel Chairs]

Panel 2 will examine the framing and conceptualization of "responsibility" in international relations, and how it may change going forward amidst the grave threats facing democracies around the world. The discussion will address accusations of self-righteousness and double standards by developed countries in how they deal with global challenges. The panel will situate these arguments within the broader context of the international order, and drawing on comparative perspectives, explore ways to address the dilemma these criticisms present.
